Magnum x Edgelands

The following articles, photographs, interviews, and blogposts document the collaboration between the Edgelands Institute and Magnum Photos, a global collective of artists and storytellers established in 1947 that pioneered an experimental approach to photojournalism. Over a period of three years and covering four of the partner cities (Medellín, Nairobi, Geneva, and Houston), this collaborative project focused on how technology is impacting and transforming our societies. The documents showcase the process by which Magnum photographers worked closely with Edgelands researchers, grassroots organisations, and cultural institutions to develop their own ground research and to visually interpret the findings in the Edgelands reports on each city. Art production in this case is not simply a form of representation but a research method, capable of engaging with a diverse range of actors and social spheres.
