Research Sprints

The Research Sprints were one of the main blocks of the Edgelands Institute, in which young people could discuss with national and international experts on the topic of security and digital technologies. Over an 8-week period, participants engaged in a conversation on digital security and its various effects, in order to develop a critical understanding of the different perspectives on this subject and to conduct research that is relevant to their own location in the world.

We Are Recording You Medellín

In 2021, the Edgelands Institute partnered with EAFIT University to explore issues at the intersection of security, civic coexistence, youth inclusion and digital surveillance in the city of Medellín, alongside the city's youth.

We invite you to learn more about this Research Sprint and Manifesto, and to listen to the six Conversations with Experts, exploring how security and coexistence in Medellín have changed over the past decades and how their intersection with digital surveillance technologies is transforming the city's social contract, especially for young people.

We Are Recording You Nairobi

In 2023, the Edgelands Research partnered with the Lawyers Hub, a Pan-African digital law and data governance think-tank headquartered in Nairobi, to explore the security challenges and the emerging surveillance technologies in Nairobi.

The Sprint was concluded with two podcast episodes independently curated by the researchers. This exercise allowed the Sprint participants to acquire new skills in relaying empirical research through an audio medium, with valuable information that is now accessible to the residents.
